Accessible Bay Area Parks
What’s a good place to go in a wheelchair to enjoy the outdoors during the rainy season? I mean trails that don’t get muddy. I don’t drive. I like Lake Merritt, and with my power chair I can get to the Berkeley Marina (Shorebird and Cesar Chavez Parks) using the pedestrian overpass at the bottom of Addison St. What are some other places to go on public transit?
- I remember reading something about accessible hikes in a Sierra Club newsletter. Here is a link to the article (followed by a summary if you can't link to it) and some contact info. If you are not interested in joining the group, maybe they can at least give you some ideas of accessible trails close to public transportation. http://sanfranciscobay.sierraclub.org/yodeler/html/2004/7/feature9.htm 'Sierrans Outdoors through Accessible Recreation (SOAR) creates opportunities for people of all abilities to participate in and lead Sierra Club activities. SOAR holds about six trips a year. Past trips have included Lafayette Reservoir, Point Pinole Regional Park, Blackies Pasture, and the Hayward Regional Shoreline. To get on our mailing list and find out about all our upcoming hikes, please contact Jonna Papaefthimiou at (510) 848-0800, ext. 312. Let Jonna know your e-mail (preferred) or postal address.
